Female cops allegedly forced to put 'Sindoor' in Hooghly over CM Mamata's "seller of Sindoor" comment to PM Modi

Political tension erupted in Chuchura, Hooghly district, on Friday when BJP workers held a protest against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent comment regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi “selling sindoor.” The protest took place at Pipulpati Panchmatha crossing and escalated after some BJP women activists allegedly applied sindoor forcibly on on-duty female police personnel managing the demonstration.

The protest began as a response to Mamata Banerjee’s statement made on Thursday during a rally in Alipurduar, where she said, “Now Modi Ji is out selling sindoor.” BJP leaders condemned the remark and organized protests in various parts of the state, including Chuchura, demanding an apology and action against the Chief Minister.

During the protest in Chuchura, police attempted to control the crowd, which led to a confrontation between police personnel and BJP women activists. Some female police officers reported that sindoor was applied to their foreheads without consent. One policewoman said, “We were on duty and sindoor was applied on us without our consent.” The BJP, however, denied these claims, with party worker Nirupa Chakraborty stating, “Sindoor is a symbol of pride. I apply it myself and want married women to wear it too. The policewomen applied it on their own; there was no force.”

Hooghly police have initiated an inquiry into the incident and deployed additional personnel to maintain law and order in the area. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any further escalation. No arrests were reported at the time of the last update.
